About the Event

Janine Bijsterbosch has worked in brain imaging since 2007. Following a PhD in Sheffield (UK) and Postdoctoral experience in Oxford (UK), Dr. Bijsterbosch joined Washington University in St Louis in 2019 as Assistant Professor in the Computational Imaging Research Center of the Department of Radiology. Dr. Bijsterbosch’s research program develops computational neuroimaging approaches and leverages epidemiological datasets to identify brain markers of mental health and to elucidate principles of functional brain organization. In addition, Dr. Bijsterbosch is an advocate for Open Science, serving as Handling Editor at Imaging Neuroscience and prior Chair of the Open Science Special Interest Group with the Organization for Human Brain Mapping. Dr. Bijsterbosch is also engaged with teaching efforts as Co-Director of the Systems Neuroscience Course in the Division of Biology & Biomedical Sciences, Co-Chair of the FSL Course Organizing Committee, and lead author of a textbook on functional connectivity analyses, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2017 (Chinese translation published in 2023).

Research into the neural mechanisms of psychopathology is traditionally performed in dedicated clinical study samples that are necessarily modest in size. Yet, the recent availability of population data allows for a new lens on psychopathology research. In my talk I will cover several of our recent UK Biobank projects aimed at elucidating heterogeneity in depression. Specifically, the talk will emphasize the differences between clinical (symptom) heterogeneity, within-subject episodic heterogeneity, heterogeneous profiles of disease comorbidity, and methodological heterogeneity.
